We here in quiet, quirky Chloride enjoy community, mountains and sunshine. Chloride sits in the foothills of the Cerbat Mountains and was established in 1860's as a mining town. We are proud to be known for being the home of the oldest operating Post Office in Arizona, and the oldest (132 years old) Baptist church . We like to keep the history alive around here with gunfights, cattle round ups and historical days dedicated to the place we call home. Chloride has been home to many artists, and several movies have been filmed here. The artists and residents have an ongoing desire to keep Chloride interesting, so decorating their yards with quirky things is a common occurrence. Our Chamber of Commerce, Historical Society, and Special Events committee are busy throughout the year planning fund raising activities. Included every year is our Saint Patrick's Parade, Old Miners Day parade, 2 all town yard sales and Children's Christmas Party. Come by and take a look around our famous little "townsite". Established in the 1860's, Chloride has a wild west history of mining, gunfights, robberies and intrigue. At one time in the 1930-40's there were almost 5000 inhabitants, and today we are a small but mighty community of around 250.
Chloride is famous for the "Roy Purcell Murals". originally painted in the early 1960's. The paintings are on giant boulders (60 ft high and 100 ft. long), nestled in a small canyon just 1.5 miles from town.
Travelers from all round the globe, and the USA have visited Chloride. Many outdoor enthusiasts come to hike, camp, horseback ride, investigate old mine sites or take their off road vehicles out on the many miles of BLM land. The weather is usually sunny, but we will get a few flurries of snow occasionally during Dec. & Jan.
We offer a large selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, staples, frozen foods, ice cream, dairy products, sodas, and out the door snacks .
We carry a medium size selection of hardware and automotive supplies for your emergencies.
We maintain a variety of household supplies, office supplies OTC medicines, mining tools, and gently used clothing.
For the overflow inventory and other large items, we have opened a small retail shop in an old miners shack on Payroll street, next to the Baptist Church. "The Dove Nest" sells locally made art, vintage clothing, jewelry, antique furniture and interesting oddities.
Chloride is over 160 years old and throughout its life many businesses and families have come and gone leaving many things behind. Our small but very full and informative Jim Fritz Museum, is proud to house only items from Chloride's history. The Silverbelle Playhouse, once an active theatre, now houses much of the historical items that were used by the actors. Several of the current residents have additional collections of historical items, such as mining equipment, prairie wagons, old cars, fire trucks, and other kinds of rusty art.
Exploring Chloride's 1 square mile can be quite an adventure!
